Crowns and Bridges

WEST BOCA DENTAL CARE

Boca Raton's Top Dentist for Crowns & Bridges

If it's been recommended that you receive either a dental crown or bridge, you may have a lot of questions for our Boca Raton dental team. A dental crown and bridge are both replacements for missing teeth that allow you to retain oral function and your smile. Though dentures are another option, they're not typically used unless you have a large number of teeth missing. This is because single dentures can easily become loose, wiggle around, or even fall out. For some, the need to take them out to clean them is a hassle they don't want, leaving crowns and bridges as better options.

If you're currently trying to choose between a crown or bridge, know that Dr. Lee Herman D.D.S and the entire West Boca Dentalcare team have you covered. Whatever option you end up going with, know that we'll be there every step of the way, ready to answer questions and offer support where needed. With that said, here are the basics of dental crowns and bridges for you to consider.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown can be used as a cap over damaged teeth or can be used to replace a missing tooth when placed over a dental implant. A dental implant is constructed of metal that is fastened to your jawbone during surgery. Over time, your bone fuses to this metal, anchoring it in your jaw and becoming one with your body.

When a crown is used to cover up damaged teeth, we do this with the goal of improving and maintaining look and function. There are a variety of materials you're able to choose from for your crown, depending on your budget. Though metal is a common option that's cost-effective, this isn't a great option if you want the crown to blend in with your other teeth and look natural. Acrylic and ceramic crowns are both options known to be both stable and of similar looks to a real tooth. Porcelain is another option, though it's good to know that it can be prone to chipping.

What is a Dental Bridge?

While a crown can cover up and strengthen damaged teeth, a dental bridge is only designed for replacing missing teeth and is typically employed when several teeth in a row are missing. They're actually composed of two crowns, one each end of the row, and a dental "bridge" of replacement teeth in the middle, called Pontics, anchored by the crowns. The crowns may be placed on existing teeth, with the replacement teeth anchored firmly in the middle.

Unless implants are used in the making of your crowns, your teeth will likely need to be filed down in order for the crowns to be placed on them. Afterward, we'll construct your bridge based on models we've made using imagery of your teeth, gums, and mouth. Like crowns, you'll get to choose from a range of materials. If you don't know which is best for your situation, feel free to ask us and we'll consult with you about your options.

How Can I Protect My Dental Work?

Though a dental crown or bridge can sometimes become loose or cracked and need to be replaced, with proper care and attention they're designed to last the rest of your life. You can ensure this is the case by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth well, at least twice daily and make sure you either floss well or use a WaterPik once per day. Though not necessary, tongue scrapers and mouthwashes can be good oral hygiene tools to have in your arsenal.

Additionally, make sure you see your dentist regularly for oral checkups and cleanings. These should happen around every six months, both to keep your teeth clean and so your dentist can check on the health of your dental work.
