What is a dental implant?

An implant is a metal screw that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is a surgical procedure that requires local anesthetic, often in conjunction with sedation.

Dental implants help restore your smile

Patients can now enjoy restored confidence in their smiles, speaking, and eating with an implant. Patients can also avoid such problems associated with traditional bridges and dentures, such as slippage and gum irritation.

Why should I have a dental implant?

A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement option, and it is considered the standard of care when replacing missing teeth. They are much more stable than traditional removable dentures. Implants can be used to replace one or all of your teeth.

Who is a candidate for artificial teeth?

Ideal candidates should be in good general health and have sufficient bone to support the implant. The bone of your jaw grows around the implant, providing stability for the crown, bridge, or overdenture that will be placed on top of it. If you do not have sufficient bone, various options are available to increase bone volume, such as bone grafting.

West Boca Dentalcare is the leading dental implant team. Here are some advantages of dental implants:

  • Implants look and feel like your own teeth: Since artificial teeth integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridgework and dentures. No one will ever know that you have a replacement tooth.
  • Implants will allow you to speak and eat again with comfort and confidence. You will be able to say goodbye to worries about misplaced dentures and poor-fitting bridges.
  • Implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.
  • Artificial teeth are made of titanium, a biocompatible material that fuses to your jawbone when surgically implanted. This fusion creates a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
  • Improved self-esteem. As you age, your facial structure naturally changes. Many people find that their implants allow them to maintain their facial structure and appearance as they age, making it easier to smile confidently, look in the mirror, and wear beautiful jewelry with which they've always been enamored.
  • Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth, causing you to mumble or slur your words. Artificial teeth allow you to speak without worrying that teeth might fall out of place.

The Dental Implant procedure

An implant procedure is a process that requires several steps. While it may feel like you've been sitting in the dentist's chair for a long time, each step is essential to ensure that your implants have the highest chance of succeeding.

Schedule your consultation at our convenient Boca Raton dental office

When you first go to the doctor performing the surgery, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork. The office staff will also take a few X-rays and pictures of your mouth. This helps give your doctor a better look at your bone and teeth before starting the surgery.

The dental implant exam

Before beginning any surgery, your doctor will examine your mouth and ask how you feel. If you are having any pain or discomfort, make sure to tell your doctor about it so they can treat it before starting with the implant. It would be best to inform your doctor about any allergies you may have and current medications or supplements you are taking so there is no risk that they interfere with the surgery or recovery process.

Dental implant tests and imaging

Your dentist will perform a thorough exam of your mouth and jaw to determine if you are a good candidate for implants. This might include taking some x-rays or CT scans of your mouth and jaw to help them plan the best treatment for you. Your dentist also might take impressions of your teeth so that they can create models for planning treatment and make custom-made replacement teeth that fit your mouth perfectly.

Dental implant process

An implant procedure is going to be different for each patient. Depending on the type of tooth you are missing and the amount of support your jawbone needs, a dentist will recommend an implant that will best suit your needs.

Regardless of the type of implant you get, the process is relatively similar. Let's look at what happens in this procedure while in your chair during the procedure.

Step 1: You'll be given an anesthetic and possibly a sedative, so you will not experience any pain.

Step 2: A small hole is made in your jawbone to accommodate the titanium implant. This opening is made just below where the tooth is missing or will be extracted.

Step 3: The titanium implant is inserted into this hole. This can take anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour, depending on how many are being placed at one time.

Step 4: The incision is closed with stitches and a gauze pad placed over the area to stop bleeding and promote healing.

A temporary crown may be placed on the implant to protect it and give you something to chew on if needed. If a temporary crown isn't used, you may need to eat soft foods until healed, which could take up to 3 months for complete healing after surgery.

You may experience some swelling in your gums for about three days after surgery, but this will subside on its own. Also, you may feel some slight discomfort during the first few days after surgery, but this, too, should resolve itself without the need for medication.

Implants are an excellent dental solution to replace your missing teeth. They look, feel, and function like your natural teeth, ensuring a normal healthy way of eating and biting. Although there is some initial retraining as you get used to using them, implants can provide a lifetime of comfort with proper care and cleaning.
