What is a root canal?

The root canal or pulp is a hollow section of soft tissue beneath the visible white enamel. The pulp houses the nerve endings, blood vessels, and other connective tissues, which nourish the tooth root during its growing period. The canal system extends from the crown to the root situated in the jaw bone and helps to hold the tooth in position. The incisors and canines will have a single pulp per tooth, while molar and premolars have multiple root canals.

A root canal therapy is a dental procedure that aims to treat infections within the pulp and protects the affected tooth from future infections. It is a delicate dental procedure performed by a dental specialist known as an endodontist. Today, advancements in the dental field and modern anesthetics ensure patients experience little to no pain, unlike the traditional root canal treatment.

Why might you need a root canal?

Root canal therapy becomes necessary if the pulp has a severe infection or an injury that causes severe discomfort. Common causes of pulp damage include:

  • A chip or crap in the tooth.
  • A deep cavity that may arise from untreated tooth decay.
  • Injuries from sporting and accidental collisions

If left untreated, the bacteria leads to tooth abscess, destroying the pulp and leading to tooth loss and jaw bone damage. Sometimes, the enamel can remain intact even after the pulp Is dead. Removing the pulp helps to heal and preserve the tooth structure. Pain and extreme tooth sensitivity after taking hot or cold drinks is often the first sign that you may need a root canal procedure. Other signs and symptoms include:

  • Inflammation and sensitivity of the surrounding gums
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Deep decay that leads to discoloration of the tooth and gums
  • Oozing of pus around the diseased tooth

Root canal therapy provides pain relief and improves overall teeth health. Tooth extraction may become necessary if the patient ignores the above symptoms. However, tooth extraction can leave behind an unsightly gap that requires synthetic implants. Check out the site below for more details on the benefits of root canal therapy.

Root canal procedure

Root canal therapy requires a clinical appointment in a specialized dental facility. The treatment process can take one or more sessions to complete and will involve four major steps

  1. Numbing using local anesthesia

The dentist numbs the gums and surrounding tissues around the affected tooth by injecting local anesthesia. The anesthesia is not sedating, meaning you'll be awake during the entire root canal removal.

  1. Pulp removal

After administering the anesthesia, the endodontist makes a tiny incision on the tooth surface to expose the damaged pulp. The endodontist then carefully removes the infected pulp using specialized tools called files. The specialist then cleans and decontaminates the root canal using sterilizing solutions. The antibiotics and sterilizing agents will prevent the reoccurrence of the infection.

  1. Filling the root canal

After cleaning and sterilizing, the dentist fills the pulp cavity using a sealer paste and a rubber-like compound that completely seals the root canal. Removing the pulp and nerve endings eliminates pain and sensation on the affected tooth. However, the tooth cannot receive nourishment from blood vessels and ligaments without its pulp. A crown filling is, therefore, necessary to protect the delicate tooth.

  1. Crown filling

Adding a crown to the affected tooth will prevent the root canal from bacteria damage that may spread through saliva. The crown also enables the patient to chew and bite food without causing complications to the affected tooth.

After root canal therapy, patients should observe good dental hygiene and practices to recover fully. It is common to experience pain in the first few days after treatment, but it is advisable to consult your dentist on the next steps if the pain persists.
