What are veneers?

A dental veneer is a very thin layer of tooth-colored material that is affixed to the front of your tooth. It is often made of either resin or porcelain. They are custom-made to match the color of your natural teeth, so they blend in seamlessly with your smile. Although there are no major side effects to a dental veneer, they do require some adjustment time.

Some patients may experience increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages, but this usually subsides within a few days after the procedure.

Who is a candidate for a veneer?

A healthy person with healthy teeth who wants to make cosmetic changes to their smile and is willing to have a minimal amount of healthy tooth structure removed may be a candidate for a veneer. Veneers are often the best choice for closing gaps between teeth, correcting uneven, worn, crooked, or chipped teeth, changing the color of teeth, or helping teeth that appear too large or small.

What you can expect when getting veneers

The best way to find out if you are a candidate for veneers is to consult with our Boca Raton cosmetic dental team. During this consultation, the dentist will examine your mouth, take x-rays, discuss your dental and medical history and talk with you about how you want your smile to look. The dentist may also recommend other treatments such as braces or whitening in addition to or instead of a veneer.

It's a two-step process. The dentist will first prepare the tooth by first removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for the veneer. That way, once the new dental veneer is attached, it will be even with the rest of your teeth. Sometimes they will take an impression before the tooth is prepared in order to be sure that the lab technician who makes your veneer understands what needs to be done.

The next step is to make an impression of your mouth and send it off to a lab, where they will make your veneer. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for your new veneer to come back from the lab. In the meantime, you may be given a temporary veneer to wear.

Once the new veneer is ready, you'll go back into the office for another appointment so that it can be cemented on. This can be a little tricky because it has to look good and feel comfortable, and also fit properly (which is why dentists always do a dry run before using any permanent cement), but after some adjustments, you'll have a beautiful new smile.

Types of veneers

There are several types of veneers, including:

Porcelain veneers

These custom-made shells of tooth-like ceramic material are designed to cover the front surface of your teeth to improve your appearance. Sometimes called dental porcelain laminates, porcelain veneers can make your teeth appear straighter, whiter, and brighter. The porcelain used in dental veneers resists stains better than resin composite materials do. Porcelain also more closely mimics the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.

Composite veneers

These are made from a composite resin material that dentists can apply directly to the surface of your teeth in the office. It's less expensive than porcelain veneer but doesn't resist stains as well.

Palatal veneers

If you have a severe malocclusion — when your upper and lower jaws don't meet properly — you might need to have a palatal expander placed on the roof of your mouth (palate). A palatal expander widens your jaw so that your upper and lower teeth will fit together better.

Lumineers

One of the most popular types of cosmetic veneer is lumineers. Lumineers can be placed over teeth to change the size, shape, color, or length of teeth. The lumineer process is pain-free and is reversible.

Lumineers require less enamel removal from your tooth before application and are longer lasting. Your dentist will make a mold of your tooth and send it off to the lab, where they will make your custom veneer.

Removable veneers

A removable veneer is made out of plastic and can be applied at home by boiling them in water. The removable veneer is then placed on your tooth, and you bite down to get a custom fit. This type of veneer is only meant to be worn for a few days at a time. They can help you with a variety of issues like chips, stains, gaps, and missing teeth but aren't meant to be permanent solutions.

Veneers vs. crowns

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Crowns are caps that encase the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
